If you think that your child may be lip tied or tongue tied, then look no further than the team at Today’s Dental Grande Prairie to discuss treatment options such as a frenectomy. We’re here to help.
What is a frenectomy?
Sometimes newborns and small children can suffer from something called a lip or tongue tie. This is where the upper lip is fused too close to the gum, or the tongue is attached too close to the lower jaw.
If a tongue or lip tie is left untreated, your child may have trouble eating or breathing or experience regular acid reflux and it could create an unnecessary speech impediment or prevent the correct facial development as your child gets older.
If your newborn suffers from difficulties latching, difficulties maintaining a latch, excessive bloating, spitting up, or if you are experiencing discomfort from them breastfeeding, they may have a lip or tongue tie that could need treatment
This is a common condition and something that we can treat quickly and easily here with a frenectomy at Today’s Dental Grande Prairie.
How do I know if my child has a tongue or lip tie?
There are many signs which may indicate that your child may have a tongue or lip tie, but of course, your pediatrician or the team here at Today’s Dental Grande Prairie can confirm a diagnosis, if you suspect that your child may be affected.
If you are struggling to breastfeed your baby or your infant is showing signs of struggling to eat, gulping, or having acid reflux issues, a frenectomy may be the simple key to remedying those problems.
Will a frenectomy hurt my baby?
A simple examination is all it takes for a diagnosis with one of our pediatric dentistry team. Not all cases of tongue or lip tie will need a frenectomy, but if it is advised, your dentist will discuss the procedure with you, explain how it will work in detail and answer any questions you may have to allay any concerns.
The treatment is fast and straightforward, and your baby should be fully healed in just a few days. We do everything we can to ensure that your child remains comfortable through the procedure and while pain medication is rarely needed afterwards, over the counter medicine can help if your child is showing any signs of discomfort.
We will advise on aftercare to ensure that the frenectomy is successful and that the lip or tongue does not reattach itself, which can sometimes happen if our guidance is not correctly followed.
