Answers to Common Questions About Braces

Whether you are looking into the possibility of getting braces to make your teeth look their best or you are getting braces to fix an issue with your teeth or bite, you surely have a few questions about braces. Here are some common questions about braces with all the information you need to know more about what you should expect.

How old do you need to be to get braces?

There is not a standard or set age to get braces; many wait until they have their full set of adult teeth before beginning braces, but in certain circumstances a child may straighten their front teeth before the remaining adult teeth are in. This can be done as early as eight or nine.

How long does it take to put braces on?

Unless there are unexpected complications or difficulties, it will usually take 1-2 hours to have braces placed, depending on the area covered and the type of braces.

Does getting braces hurt?

You can expect to experience some pain during the initial process and the days following the procedure, but having them in your day-to-day life should not hurt. If you are experiencing pain, talk to your dentist about it.

How long will I need braces?

On average, people usually have braces anywhere from 12-24 months, though due to everyone having different needs, some people will have them for less time while others require more.

How much are braces going to cost?

Braces will cost, on average, anywhere from $3,000-$7,000, depending on the type of braces and what is all being done, such as just cosmetic correction compared to correcting an issue with your jaw joints.

Do I need to do anything special to take care of my braces?

You should not need to do anything outside of normally brushing and flossing your teeth a few times a day, though you should take extra care brushing and flossing around the brackets of your braces now.

Do I actually need braces?

Most people who choose to get braces do so out of the desire to have the best-looking smile possible. However, there are still quite a few people who get braces out of necessity in order to correct a jaw or bite issue, or in order to prevent one from further developing. If you need braces outside of wanting them for their cosmetic benefits, your dentist will let you know and talk you through how braces may be beneficial for you.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

As Invisalign becomes more popular, more people are choosing it over braces, leaving many wondering if Invisalign is better. While both result in the same end product, Invisalign can be more expensive than traditional braces. If you choose Invisalign, make sure you will not lose the retainers and keep up with cleaning them regularly.
